Questions and answers
How the codes work, what they cost, and what happens after you print them.
The codes
Is the picture really part of the code?
Yes. The squares that carry your link are arranged to form the picture. Nothing is pasted over the code, so it doesn't rely on the code's error correction to hide a logo.
Will it scan?
Every design is checked against our phone tests before it can be downloaded. Designs that phones found unreliable cannot be downloaded, and the generator suggests what to change. Each download states the smallest size to print it at.
How big should I print it?
Picture codes need about 0.6 mm per square; the download gives the exact minimum for your design, usually 3 to 5 cm across, and 8.5 cm at Max detail. Print larger if people will scan from further away: about one tenth of the distance. The print size guide has the table by version and how the sizes were measured.
What can a code open?
A web link, a contact card that saves into the phone, a short text, or a Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi codes are new: scan yours and join the network before you print it.
Can I use my own logo or photo?
Yes, if you have the right to use it. PNG, JPEG, WebP and SVG work. Simple logos with clear shapes give the most recognisable codes.
Prices and payment
What is free?
Making and previewing any design, as often as you like. The preview on screen scans.
What does a download include?
PNG, SVG and PDF files for one design, at any size, downloaded as often as you like, plus one free redo within 7 days.
Does a code stop working if I don't pay again?
No. A code you bought contains your address itself and works for as long as that address does. Only editable links depend on a subscription, and they keep working for 30 days after it ends.
What is an editable link?
The code opens a short paintqr.com address that forwards to your destination. You can change the destination after printing and see how often the code is scanned.
What statistics do I get for an editable link?
Scans per day, unique visitors, countries and device families (iPhone, Android, computer), for the last 7, 30 or 90 days, with a CSV export. Nothing about the person scanning is stored: no address, no name.
I made an editable link during the beta without an account. Does it keep working?
Yes for now. When paid plans start we announce a date on this site; links that nobody has signed in for stop forwarding on that date. Sign in from the browser you made it in and the link joins your account, where Pro keeps it running.
Can I get a refund?
If a code you bought doesn't scan when printed at the stated size, we refund it. The refunds page has the details.
Do I need an account?
No. You can make and buy codes without one; your receipt email carries the link to your files. Signing in, by an emailed link or with Google, keeps your codes in one place so you can download them again and use the free redo from any device.
I bought a code before signing in. Will it show up?
Yes, if you sign in with the email address you used at checkout, or from the browser you bought it in.
Using the codes
Can I use the codes commercially?
Yes. Library icons are licensed for commercial use too.
Do you track the people who scan?
Codes that contain your address directly are never tracked. For editable links we count scans by day, country and device family, without storing anyone's IP address.
Can I make many codes at once?
Bulk creation from a spreadsheet and an API are planned. Write to us if you need them now.
